Things Are Coming Together Nicely For Our Resident Artist!

© 2011 'Fruit Trees With Missing Trunks'
David has recently been in touch with West Country Galleries to tell us about one of his latest creations entitled `Fruit Trees With Missing Trunks`. He informed us that these four paintings where originally sketched back last year, but he has only got round to doing them now and it was perfect timing as he is now painting still life. David was told to start painting real life by Peter Smith ; so these paintings sprung to mind.
After a few life paintings David decided to go for the proper paintings and they turned out just as he wanted them too in fact better, because the original sketches had tree trunks in them. Whilst putting in the sky, he stood back and thought they look really nice as they are more surrealism so with his mind made up, he got started on glazing (a new technique)  and as you can see from the picture they look pretty real!
They are available to purchase on his gallery page now. Note: they do not come framed!

Vincent Blackwell - New Works On His Gallery Page.

Creative Rage by artist Vincent Blackwell
Cosmic Connections by Vincent Blackwell

Our popular resident artist Vincent Blackwell has been very busy creating his latest work and West Country Galleries are pleased to announce that we have more of his striking creations now available on his gallery page.

His work is vastly admired, especially those embracing the abstract and contemporary field of painting.  Vincent is still receiving positive responses from people who have viewed his work, garnering comparisons to the likes of Pollock and Monet.  His work is highly textured and consists usually of three to seven layers on the composition.  The architecture of these striking pieces is manifested in the wide range of tools Vincent uses to achieve his artistic intention to canvas.

During the year, Vincent’s work was shown at exhibitions in Sidmouth, Devon, followed by a solo exhibition at the Grapevine Wine Bar, Exmouth, Devon.

His style has been recognised and admired by an international art curator who is aligning him with various exhibitions in Paris and New York.

Sue Bicks - Contemporary Garden Stoneware at West Country Galleries

Etruscan Shield Urn - multicolour

created by artist - Sue Bicks

West Country Galleries is pleased to welcome aboard renowned contemporary artist Sue Bicks.

Sue's work consists of individually handmade pots made in Devon which are put together from a range of stoneware clays decorated with different combinations of textures, slips, oxides and glazes.

Natural variations at all stages of the process means that each pot is unique. This is a contributory factor to the excitement of opening the kiln when the surprise (each time) is a work of art conjured up by the elements.

Sue told us “We don't believe in bringing our pots inside in winter, so they are fired to around 1250 deg C. This makes them frost resistant”. Some people just love to have them in their conservatories”

Sue also told us " I am busy working on a couple of pots for the Christmas Exhibition at Duchy Square Gallery".

Sue is busy selecting more pieces to add to her gallery page, so watch this space for more of her stunning creations!

“Big Cat Series” – by Ron Burnell

Snow Leopard by Ron Burnell
West Country Galleries first made its acquaintance with Ron Burnell when researching and putting together the celebratory blog for the 1951 Festival of Britain.  Ron very kindly donated beautifully scanned images from the Festival of Britain catalogue “Design in the Festival”.

During our exchange of e-mails, Ron revealed that he is an accomplished and very keen amateur photographer.  We persuaded him to send us samples of his work and we were astonished at the technique and clarity of the wonderful "Big Cat Series" of photographs that came our way.

The images were taken at the Wildlife Heritage Foundation at Smarden, Kent where they breed endangered species of big cat. The animals have large enclosures but are not 'in the wild'. Ron went on to tell us that he had an A3 calendar produced of his “Big Cats” by Photobox for 2011 which he sent to his family.

Leo by Ron Burnell

This is a photograph from the “Big Cat” series.  Ron commented “Don't worry; Leo is not as close as he looks but was certainly not tame. He was about 10 metres from me but my 28 - 300mm L Series Canon zoom lens picked up the detail”.

The African Lion by Ron Burnell
Ron says  "The African lion is just a bit of fun really. My daughter Sarah calls him Pavarotti because he appears to be singing his heart out".

Tuesday 4 October 2011

Resident artist David Stanier is a Busy, Busy, Bee!

David has sold quite a few paintings over the past few months! He told us "the most nervous part of a sale I think, is the feedback I receive. I've received brilliant comments, so I'm very happy that they where happy! I've also sold two more pieces, these have a little more story behind them".

The First Big Step by David Stanier

First up was his latest piece The First Big Step. We contacted David to get a very high quality picture of his painting as it is going to be featured in the October 2011 edition of Summerset Life Magazine. He was over joyed by this and went to a friend who owned a decent camera. Whilst they where taking pictures of the painting his friend decided there and then to buy the painting! David was shocked, but he wasn’t going to say no and it now hangs proudly on his living room wall, as it was a box canvas there was no need to wait for a frame.

You're Not Alone by David Stanier

David went on to tell us "Second, but to me more important, to me anyway, was the sale of You’re Not Alone. I donated this piece to a charity organisation called Fat Fluffs it is a rabbit rescue centre. As I am an animal lover, mainly rabbits, I was more than willing to help. It fetched a nice amount of £170.00 I couldn’t be more happy! It’s a win, win situation, someone get a piece of art they like and the bunnies get some pennies! Brilliant!"
