Our resident artist David W L Stanier is keeping us up to date on his latest creative episode and he is keen for us to relay to you all the latest instalments. David loves to paint and is acquainted with withdrawals if he does not pick up his brush daily.  The picture above, David sent to us, as he wants you all to know that he is currently testing out his new table easel (a big piece of mdf on his existing one), "what a difference!" he says!

David told us that it’s important to have this for his new style of painting and for life painting as he now uses a mahl stick. Rather than wait for the paint to dry for a day and resume painting the next day, David can now rest the mahl stick on the mdf board and rest his hand on the stick with out smudging the painting.  David's customised mahl stick did come in handy for his new serious painting which included a bucket, yes that’s right a bucket! He's quite happy how it turned out even though it was the first layer it looks quite real.

Below is a picture of his latest project...but it's not finished yet; but David couldn’t resist showing you peeps hope you like it.

David's latest creation. Just a taster....it's not ready yet!

Cleo Mussi in her studio

24 September 2011 - 12 November 2011

Cleo Mussi: Pharma's Market

Cleo Mussi is an established Mosaic Artist and respected within the Applied Arts both Nationally and Internationally. Originally training at Goldsmiths in the late 80’s.
Pharma’s Market is a mosaic installation by internationally renowned mosaic artist Cleo Mussi. A culmination of two years research exploring the contrasting imagery of historical and contemporary farming, this exhibition connects traditional ideas about food, agriculture and animal husbandry with modern developments in stem cell research and genetic modification. Although the setting of the exhibition is a traditional agricultural fair, visitors will experience an exhibition with a distinctly contemporary twist.
Cleo has an engaging story to tell, and her characters, from life-sized ‘robo-rabbits’ to ‘space scientists’ and ‘bucolic’ farmers, all jostle for their part in the plot. Her stories are derived from the real world of science and medicine, albeit reconstructed through the process of her own particular visual imagination. Using recycled china to make her extraordinary figures, her surreal sense of humour is where she has made her mark. It’s as if the pieces of china become fragments of DNA in her own genetic rearrangements of nature.

Update to the Evolver Prize Competition - the winner is!.......

Over 280 works were entered for this year’s competition, in many and varied forms. The winning entry for 2011 was “A Portrait of The Artist By A Young Dog,” by photographer Andrew Bolton. Visitor’s can vote for any work they prefer in The Visitor’s Choice ballot, and the artist who receives the most votes in this category will be featured in a future edition of Evolver.

West Country Galleries were invited to a Private Viewing at the Malthouse, Lyme Regis, where we met up with our resident artists Rita Sugden ne Richardson  and Lyn Marie Whiteman. They have enjoyed a great start to their exhibition!  Lyn contacted us to tell us "it`s all going so well!  We have had more than 200 plus people in on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th;  and we have both sold 2 paintings already!"

Paintings include land and seascapes, animal studies and works in collage.
Both artists are inspired by the local landscapes, capturing the light in a range of mediums, including oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics and mixed media.

We did mention in our earlier blog spot that Rita has a flair for making crumbly fudge which had a little exhibition slot of its own displayed in the corner; tempting the pallet of many a visitor. Rita sells her fudge under her trade name Rose Cottage Fudge.

Lyn has a Gallery and Studio at Rousdon, and is also a Registered Polarity Practitioner specialising in Bodywork sessions.  See: www.purepolarity.co.uk
