`YOUR PAINTINGS` NOW LAUNCHED ON THE BBC

Take A Guided Tour  of the Nation's Art Collection

There is a groundbreaking new web initiative that aims to put the nation’s complete oil painting collection online for the first time which is uncovering the nation's art collection.

Frank Skinner is just one of the guides to the paintings in the nation's art collection.  You are also able to choose your own tour guide if you prefer. Leading figures in entertainment and the arts have created a wonderful slideshow guide of some of their personal choices.

You will be amazed at the hundreds of participating galleries and collections across the UK.  You can even find a gallery to visit near you.

There are currently 63,000 paintings on line now! and the catalogue is building. The site is asking members of the public to get involved and help them tag the nation's paintings. On the site you will see a `Target` logo which is a barometer view of the tagged collections so far.....the aim is to ramble towards a target of 200,000 paintings!

There is also a segment devoted to `Hidden Paintings`, which leads you to watch BBC iPlayer for some enthralling stories about paintings that are not on public display. `Share Your Discoveries` is another category that is hungry to hear from the public of paintings that embrace a special meaning for you.

The Crocus Gallery - Nottingham

The Crocus Gallery
1 Church Square, Lenton
Nottingham, United Kingdom

Written by Theresa Benton and Katie Rhodes

‘The Crocus Gallery has been Stitched Up!’
The Crocus Gallery’s new and exciting exhibition ‘Boxed, Tiled and Stitched Up’ will be launching on the 1st July 6pm-9pm and continuing until 16th July. This exhibition is the culmination of a year-long project in which the ‘Thursday Art Group’ has run workshops and created two and three dimensional artwork using a variety of media. The group exists to offer a safe space where people from local communities are encouraged to develop their creative talents in a mutually supportive environment and find a platform to exhibit their work.

For three years the ‘Thursday Art Group’ has been supported by local art galleries and is now joining The Crocus Gallery. The work varies from ceramic tiles with incised leaf designs, boxes of memories and large textile works with portraits drawn with thread and autumn inspired images that are all hand embroidered. The range of styles is complex with a mix of delicate and robust works that even surprised the members with the realisation of how creative they are.

We also have ‘Lenton Faces’ featured in the Second Gallery. This exhibition is based on local residents in the Lenton area and is very much about the community. It features photographic projections of old pictures sourced by residents of Nottingham. The gallery also encourages local people to come along and add their own information and pictures to the walls of the gallery. This exhibition is open from the 2nd to 16th July with a Launch Event on Friday 1st July, so come along and participate so that you can make your mark!

At four years of age, artist Aelita Andre is the youngest professional painter in the world. Using acrylics and mixed media, she creates large tableaux of abstract forms as she swirls, spreads, and pours paint across the canvas. She often incorporates bark, twigs, children’s toys, bird feathers, and other found objects into her paintings, lending depth and texture to the overall effect. What makes Aelita’s work so compelling is the lightness that pervades her work, a carefree approach that remains completely innocent of anything except those materials that lie before her. Colors are pure, forms unfettered, resulting in an immediacy and spontaneity that renders each painting unique. Yet underlying her free approach is a real attention to both composition and form, a testament to her intuitive artistic prowess. These paintings are both contemplative and powerful, providing a window into the emancipated creative subconscious mind of a child.

Aelita Andre is of Russian heritage but currently lives with her parents in Melbourne, Australia, She first gained international attention when she was 20 months old, creating her first impressive body of artwork before reaching the age of two.

Without explaining who Aelita was or about her age, her mother showed some examples of her art to the curator of an exhibition she was herself due to take part in – and he was so impressed that he asked to get in touch with the artist so that he could include the work he had been shown! Once the identity of the artist was explained to him, he remained undaunted – the quality of the work proved that it should be included in the exhibition together with that of talented professional artists, regardless of the age of its creator. Since then Aelita has gained prestige throughout the world, and her paintings are held in collections in Europe, Asia and Australia. Britain’s BBC
even congratulated her on her second birthday!

The following statement was given on her style of creativity:

"Aelita’s style is reminiscent of Mark Tobey’s “Canticle” specifically, as well as broadly the pioneering ‘accidentalist’ work of Andre Masson (who influenced Pollock) and the accidentalist movement. Masson used lack of sleep, deprivation of food and also the use of drugs to free himself from rational control and get closer to the subconscious mind - a state in which children ‘naturally’ operate in without the requirement of drugs, alcohol and sleep/food deprivation. In other words for children, as in Aelita’ case, this is the normal and natural mode of operation".
“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child”

`Fake or Fortune` BBC1 - Sunday 7.00pm

We all know art expert Philip Mould and TV Presenter/Journalist Fiona Bruce from the very popular TV programme Antiques Roadshow .  Their investigations into the world of subterfuge and intrigue, battling with complex issues often hidden beneath the art establishment; makes for excellent viewing.

The second episode of this series fell on a painting found dumped by a rubbish tip which turned out to be a lost work by prestigious and renowned American artist of the 19th century, Winslow Homer. This stunning watercolour was valued at 250,000 dollars.  Now, when you find something as valuable as a Winslow Homer painting dumped in a rubbish tip you would naturally assume that it’s `finders keepers`……well apparently not, as Fiona Bruce found out when investigating the legality of it all.

Fisherman Tony couldn't believe his luck when he stumbled upon a pile of pictures apparently dumped at his favourite riverside spot. Tony had stored them in his loft for 15 years before he and his daughter visit an Antiques Roadshow where he is told by Philip Mould that one of the pictures is worth £30,000. It's an unknown work by one of America's most important 19th century artists, Winslow Homer

One whiff of cash, everything and everybody seeps out of the woodwork!  How did this painting end up being dumped in such an unlikely place and who legally owns the picture?

As Philip Mould and Fiona Bruce investigate, the story takes a series of unexpected turns; in the Bahamas they decipher when and why the painting was made and who the mysterious sitters are, whilst in New York an auction house values the picture closer to $250,000 in preparation for sale. But a tense denouement within minutes of the auction turns everything upside down when a mysterious figure arrives and raises even bigger questions for all involved.

Paul Liggins - Summer Exhibition 2011

The Mulberry Tree Gallery, Swanage, Dorset
Our resident artist Paul Liggins has been very busy lately keeping up with commissions and staging his Summer Exhibition.  Make a date in your diary for the exhibition which is being held at The Mulberry Tree, Swanage, Dorset, from the 23rd July until 30th August.

Paul is hoping to show eight to ten new paintings, which he is currently working on now, and he will be showing his work alongside regulars to the gallery.  Pop in to the gallery for wine and nibbles on Saturday 23rd July.

In the artist’s own words, “My paintings come about by observing the humour of life that most people pass by each day because they are too busy. Taking time out to observe life makes you realise how great life is”.

Paul Liggins' work is fun, colourful and full of detail. In nearly all of his paintings you can spot a Jack Russell terrier, a starfish or two and some pesky seagulls. Paul is definitely an artist to watch out for.

Cats & Dogs

Wednesday 6th July 6:30pm - 9.30pm at the Unit 24 Gallery, 20 Great Guildford St, London.

Unit 24 Gallery - London

Relationships between people are very complicated.
Many of us discover that the pets make not only great companions but also make often a special substitute for human relationships.
They are also a great inspiration for artists.
The show juxtaposes different ways of looking at art objects and their subjects. Art lovers and pet lovers are invited to examine these differences.
UNIT 24 invites a group of international artists who si
mply believe that pets are fascinating. You can expect humor, intellectual challenge, avant-garde art and some grotesque.
We do guarantee entertainment for both lovers of art and pets.
UNIT 24 invites dogs and cats as our VIP (Very Important Pets) to attend the show. VIPs will receive a “doggy bag” to take home sponsored by London pet shops.
Visitors are also invited to take a part in the street performance by Eli Chojak-Mysko.
Unit 24 hopes the show will entertain and create a good pet friendly atmosphere and provide a look at art from different perspectives.
A sense of humor and some critical skills are highly recommended.

UNIT 24 is pleased to invite animals and art lovers to the exhibition
CATS AND DOGS
UNIT 24
PRIVATE VIEW DATE: 6 July 2011 6:30pm-9:30pm
Exhibition until 29 July 2011
About Unit 24

Unit 24 is both a hyper-modern, completely minimalist space, just three minutes from the great Tate Modern, and a functional dry cleaning business. You can go there to collect your spotless cleaning but in fact this is an art gallery of deliciously ironic and serious intent. The spacious white cubes of its interior are host to an amazing array of contemporary art, a million miles away from being an elitist institution. Unit 24 is open to a wide group of viewers; it communicates to the modern urban citizen of the futurist cityscape around Tate modern that art can’t be avoided any more than any of our other essential needs – dry cleaning included.
