Arts Week at St James The Great, Dursley - Art Exhibition 2011

St James The Great Church, Dursley, Gloucs

St James The Great Church, Dursley staged for Arts Week 2011 and Art Exhibition and Sale in support of the James Hopkins Trust for Special Children and Dursley Parish Church.

This was the tenth Arts Week held at the church which featured some wonderful paintings by local artists.  Last year the church was unable to hold the event because the church was full, top to bottom, with scaffolding.  At this year's event visitors were able see some beautiful mosaics designed by artist Debra Stirling.

There were over sixty exhibits at this year's art exhibition.  There was a surprisingly large number of works in pastel, a medium that requires skill and experience to avoid a rather vague and furry result.

Featured at the exhibition was a stunning piece by Sheila West in acrylic medium. Two impressive paintings by Suzanne Robinson using mixed media. One of the most accomplished watercolours is by Gill Littleford with her lilies. Vicky Cox's piece entitled `White Stallion`which zooms in on a horse's head is a talent of a high calibre. Other well accomplished works of art were by Jean Dove entitled `Farmhouse Fayre` in pastels. Pixie McVicar's pastel entitled `Morning` which portrayed a haunting and subdued quality. To be included in stakes of high ranking are Beryl Lewis and Peter Lles with paintings entitled `White Horse` and Sunday Morn`.

Classed as best in the show is John Bramley, who displays a considerable mastery of watercolour in which he submitted three works.

Credit is also given to the small photography exhibition by the Dursley Training Unit Day Centre.  All the photographs are beautifully composed, sharp and meticulously presented.
